Beginning 'The White Flower'

Just the beginning of this piece, called 'The White Flower' (after the beautiful Kawabata short story of the same name).  I made the drawings on front and back, watercolored, and now the long, laborious process of the multi-layored embroidery begins. 

I'm currently working on four canvases in 'The Thin Red Line' series, and aim to have ten completed.

Beginning 'The Red Balloon'

The start of another new piece, 'The Red Balloon'.  I anticipate being finished with both this work and 'Margadh na Gruaige' ('The Hair Market') in about a week.  As you can see above, I've just started with the embroidery, and have quite a lot left.  

The new series will be called 'The Thin Red Line'. 

New work in new series

Unfinished new work in a new series, named after a Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill poem called 'Margadh na Gruaige' ('The Hair Market').  I have a ways to go before it is completed.

Constellation

Double sided NY Times images, embroidery thread, light. On one side, a smiling man wearing a suit. On the other, three women living in poverty. A cow embroidered over all of it, with large needle holes where light can stream through. Experimenting with this, as I'm considering making some light shades.

A Needle Pulling Thread at Bows and Arrows

 
Bows and Arrows writes:

Bows and Arrows buys five of my canvases!

Out of Dallas, Texas, Bows and Arrows shows amazing art and sells gorgeous flower arrangements.

They've bought (outright!) five of my pieces for an upcoming group show.  They were previously shown at a solo show I had this past summer at Spacecraft, here in Brooklyn. 

Interestingly, it was just over a year ago today that I started embroidering on canvas and showed my first work, in a show at Brooklyn Collective (which was where, incidentally, the owners of Bows and Arrows bought their first of my pieces, entitled 'Growing Pains'.)

The Hand That Feeds - Sold!

 
 
My friend Tom has been in town for a few days before leaving on a many-month stint working in the jungles of Colombia.  It's been great to see him- an added bonus is that this past weekend he brought a friend by who not only loved my work (some of which is littered around my loft), but bought the above piece, called 'The Hand That Feeds', one of my favorites from my solo show this past summer at Spacecraft.
